Description

By the year 2030, it is estimated that the worldwide volume of end-of-life photovoltaic (PV) modules can reach up to 1.7 million tons, of which Germany solely will account for 1 million. Since PV are considered waste electric and electronic equipment (WEEE), the EU Commission has established rules in the Directive 2012/19/EU that guide the collection, transport, and recycling with defined targets. Within this cooperation project between IME and ABCircular GmbH, financed by the Zentralle Innovationsprogramm Mittelstand (ZIM), the c-Si PV module is the input material. This type of PV contains glass, Aluminum, polymer layers, Copper, and Silver, summing up to 90% of the materials, which make PV modules attractive for recycling not only due to the ecological point of view, but also economically. The goal of the project is to establish a “Green Chemistry” recycling process in which all the products presents quality for manufacturing new PV. The IME tasks within the project will focus on the differences of microwave and conventional pyrolysis of the PV module, which targets the elimination of the polymers. This allows the liberation of the Si/Cu fraction, which can be further easily recovered.
